Of the highest free-standing mountains in the world
Lots of wildlife
The snowy peak of the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro,
stretches 5 895m into the skies. One of the most popular destinations
in Africa, the top is reached through a moderate to strenuous six
day hike through the five distinct zones: from cultivated lands at
the bottom, through rainforest, heath and moorland, followed by alpine
vegetation, highland desert and barren snow at the top.
The 756km² area above the 2 700m contour of the mountain mountain
is part of the protected Kilimanjaro National Park. This includes
some of the lower slopes where animals like elephant, buffalo, rhino,
leopard and monkeys reside, though they are more often heard than
seen! Birdwatching is plentiful too.
